Vampire Penguin Manila

February 11, 2018

Shaved snow desserts are getting popular in the Philippines. If you must know what shaved snow is, it’s a combination of ice cream and shaved ice. With shaved snow, it is feathery, has a hint of sweetness and creaminess and very cold. Just one bite, it can instantly melt in your mouth. There’s this shaved snow dessert in the Metro and it is no other than Vampire Penguin Manila.

Located at Ayala Malls the 30th in Pasig, it’s a dessert shop that originally started in California. It’s a family business owned by the San Luis brothers since 2013. For this food event,  I was invited by Sherlyn Hernandez of @wheressherlyn. It was my first time to hear of this dessert place and I wanted to see what they could offer so I said yes to this invitation.

E X P E R I E N C E

For their specials, Sherlyn and I ordered the Strawberry Cheesecake (280php) and Tuxedo (200php). Their Strawberry Cheesecake consists of Strawberry and Vanilla Snow, Strawberries and Cheesecake. The serving was huge so I highly suggest you share this dessert with someone else (not unless you have a sweet tooth). Their Tuxedo, on the other hand, consists of Chocolate Snow, Sliced Almonds, Strawberries, Marshmallows, Chocolate syrup and Condensed Milk. This is my favorite among all that was served because the strawberry complemented the taste of the chocolate.

Strawberry Cheesecake (280php)

Tuxedo (200php)

Other desserts served were Halo-Halo (225php) and The Jillian (220php). The Jillian consists of Green Tea & Thai Tea Snow, Crushed Oreos and Condensed Milk. This has got to be my 2nd favorite because I love green tea and the taste of the green tea and crushed oreos complemented each other.

Halo-Halo (225php)

The Jillian (220php)

Aside from shaved snow desserts, they also serve different drinks like milk tea to satisfy customer’s cravings.

I am definitely going back to try their other shaved snow desserts and hopefully try their Thai Milk Tea someday.

Restaurants Worth Going Back in San Juan, La Union

November 10, 2017

San Juan, La Union is the easiest surfing spot to go to from Manila. Although La Union is known for their waves, tourists also go for their food. Along the highway are restaurants, cafes and food stalls. This post is dedicated for those restaurants I believe is worth going back to.

L A  U N I O N  R E S T A U R A N T S

  1. Tagpuan sa San Juan

Tagpuan is a hole-in-a-wall restaurant where partygoers usually go to sober up after having drinks. It’s located at the side of the road that’s why it’s hard to find. What’s interesting about Tagpuan is that they serve delicious meals and prices are affordable. Other restaurants in the area would cost you around 200-300php. In Tagpuan, one meal can already cost you 90php and above.

They are known for their Tapa and it will cost you 95php. Their bagnet, on the other hand, costs 120php. When my best friend, her boyfriend and I went back to La Union, we ordered the bagnet again because that’s how much we missed eating this dish. Please remember that La Union serves great bagnet and that is one should not miss.

What I love about Tagpuan’s bagnet is how juicy and crunchy it is. It goes well along with the tomato salsa at the side. Although I love this meal, I still found this quite expensive because of its servings.

  1. The Coffee Library

Beside Tagpuan lies this new coffee shop called The Coffee Library. They originated from Baguio City, specializing in Vietnamese and Italian coffees. I am impressed with its interiors – wood is the majority of the material used. The café gave off a homey and cozy ambiance. A must try is their Iced Mocha. The taste of the mocha wasn’t that strong, just right. I did not get the chance to try their Vietnamese coffees. I will gladly go back just to try them out.

  1. El Union Coffee

This is a popular café in La Union that’s been gracing our Instagram feeds. Aside from their craft coffee, they also serve different kinds of food which a lot of people take for Instagram. One look at their café, you can feel and see how surfing influences their theme.

  1. Coast Call Kitchen and Bar

Located at San Juan Surf Resort, it’s a restaurant that offers international dishes at a reasonable rate. We ordered their bestsellers which are Coast Call Special (325php) and Buffalo Wings (265php). Among the two dishes we ordered, I would have to go for their Buffalo Wings. It consists of classic crispy chicken wings coated with your choice of flavor garlic parmesan, smokey barbeque and spicy hot. It was easy to eat the wings and the flavor we chose (garlic parmesan) complemented it.

  1. Makai Bowls

Makai Bowls is a known food hub in La Union. This is a place where people who are health conscious would go to. Itused to be located in Flotsam and Jetsam. It is now found at the back of El Union Coffee. A must try is their Amianan bowl (240php). It consists of dragon fruit, mango, papaya, banana and acai juice. Do take note that this bowl is seasonal.

To Experience Tuscany Through Marcia Adam’s Restaurant

March 15, 2017

I discovered Marcia Adam’s Restuarant through a Booky post: 20 of Tagaytay’s Best Kept Secret Restaurants. Seeing these kinds of posts makes me want to go to Tagaytay every weekend and try them. In my first visit, I had dinner along with my parents. I wasn’t able to take a lot of photos that time. Last Friday was my 2nd visit and was with my college best friend and a close friend.

We decided to have lunch in Marcia Adams. It was a good choice to have lunch in Marcia Adams on a weekday because we had the whole place to ourselves and we were not shy to take lots of photos. What I love about Marcia Adams is its ambiance – Tuscany setting. As you arrive, the first thing you will notice is their wooden door. Once you enter the main gate, you will get to see their garden. Their garden makes me feel at home and I felt like we were in a maze. You don’t have to worry though because there are signs that will point you to the right direction.

Our Set Meal in Marcia Adam’s

I ordered the following: Baba Ganoush (appetizer), Chicken Kebab (main dish), and Fried Bananas w/ Chocolate Dip (dessert). I find 700php to be just right. Along with your main course, you also have your own appetizer and dessert.  All you have to do is pick your desired appetizer and dessert. Debbie, my close friend, ordered Tzatiki w/ Lettuce Chips (appetizer), Chicken Kebab (main dish) and Strawberry Yoghurt Icecream w/ Berry Compote (dessert). Patty, my best friend, ordered Hummus w/ Whole Wheat Tortilla (appetizer), Chicken Kebab (main dish) and Panna Cotta w/ Lemon Sauce (dessert).

For the appetizers, I still preferred the Tzatiki w/ Lettuce Chips. I actually do know where you can buy lettuce chips. Just comment down below if you want to know where! For the dessert, I should have gotten Strawberry Yoghurt Icecream instead of the Fried Bananas. The fried bananas is good but I was not able to fully enjoy it because I was full from the main course.

Marcia Adam’s Restaurant is perfect for those who want to experience a short getaway and experience a Tuscany ambiance. Their food is just right (taste wise and budget wise). Aside from Instagram worthy, you can bring your significant other and have a relaxing date while being one with nature and the beautiful view.

Banawe + Binondo Food Trip Part 1

February 23, 2017

I have been wanting to go on a food trip in Banawe and Binondo for some time now. The only problem is finding people to go with since my parents won’t allow me to go on my own. Thankfully, my cousin was available last Saturday. Get ready to join our food tour and discover the yummy restaurants in Banawe and Binondo.

Banawe Food Trip

1. Banawe Soybean Curd

According to my cousin, Banawe Soybean Curd is one of the oldest soybean places in Banawe. In fact, it’s actually one of the best when one craves for soybean. Since both of us didn’t eat breakfast, we decided to have our first meal here. They have different options to choose from – cold taho, hot taho, different flavors. We decided to go for their bestseller which is the cold taho.

What I love about Banawe Soybean Curd is that it is all natural. You also have the option to buy from their store and give it as a gift to a friend or family member. If we were not in a hurry, we could have decided to go back here to buy for the house. There is always a next time!

2. Hugki Dumplings

Right in front of Banawe Soybean Curd is the famous Hugki Dumplings. We ordered their famous steamed kutchay dumplings. We got so fascinated with this restaurant because the food is cheap and yummy! It only cost us 130php w/ 10 pieces! You will feel like you are in heaven while eating their kutchay dumplings.

After our short Banawe foodtrip, we decided to head straight to Binondo. We decided to pass by the Binondo Church to offer a short prayer to the Lord before we resumed to our doings.

Binondo Food Trip

3. Lan Zhou La Mien

For our lunch, we decided to eat in Lan Zhou La Mien. It was quite hard to find the place because the signage of the restaurant were in Chinese characters. Just remember that it’s beside Wai Ying.

We decided to have our separate bowls. My cousin ordered the Beef La Mien while I ordered their Mixed Beef La Mien. The only difference is that I have additional toppings like dumplings. My order cost 190php while my cousin’s was around 140php. It’s still cheap due to the size of the bowl and we love the fact how juicy their beef is and how flavorful their noodles is. Expect us to go back here! (but of course, we will be sharing one order by then since we got full easily)

4. Dong Bei Dumplings

Since we were too full from our meal in Lan Zhou La Mien, we decided that Dong Bei be our last restaurant stop for the day. We ordered another kutchay dumplings. This time, they had 14 pieces! It only costs us around 150php. Such a steal right?! We were supposed to order their Xiao Long Bao as well but it was not available that time. This gives us the reason to go back here!

This is Part 1 of our Banawe and Binondo Food Trip. We are definitely going back to discover more restaurants in the area! Stay tuned for more foodie adventures!

Jeepney Stop Restaurant in Boracay

January 16, 2017

In the Philippines, the main mode of transportation is the jeepney. Jeepneys were made from U.S. Military jeeps from World War II. As the U.S. was starting to leave the Philippines, they sold these jeepneys to the Filipinos. Filipinos would start to accommodate passengers and decorate the jeepneys with vibrant colors.

In its present time, jeepneys are not only used as transportation. You can even see it in restaurants.  The concept of putting jeepneys in restaurants started with Gerry’s Jeepney. Located in Maginhawa, they would let their customers have the option to eat inside the jeep and do it “kamayan” style. Another restaurant that has the jeepney theme is Jeepney Stop.

Jeepney Stop Restaurant – D’Mall Boracay

Jeepney Stop is a new restaurant in Boracay. Located at D’Mall, they serve Filipino dishes and turned the jeepney into a bar area. When we saw this restaurant, my mom’s officemates and I thought that the owner of Gerry’s Jeepney also owns this branch. We decided to give it a try.

The food we ordered were sisig, chicken kawali and calamansi tart. If I were to rate the food, I will have to give it a 3.5/5. The sisig was just alright. The sisig in Manam and Gerry’s Jeepney is much better. I would have to commend the chicken kawali. It had a flavorful taste to it and made me want to eat more. For the calamansi tart, there was this refreshing feel to it and it was yummy as per my mom’s officemate.

Jeepney Stop is a restaurant that is perfect for Instagram-worthy pictures. But when it comes to the food, don’t expect me to come back soon. And ifever I do get back to eat here, for sure the chicken kawali will be the one I will order again.

Jamie’s Steak Room

January 11, 2017

A day before the New Year started, my parents and I went to SM Iloilo City to roam around. As lunch time approached, we discovered this new area where there are new restaurants. My dad and I LOVE eating steak. So upon seeing Jamie’s Steak Room, we decided to give it a try.

Jamie’s Steak Room is a new food haven. Located at the 2nd floor of SM Southpoint, this restaurant offers affordable steak and different dishes. It was the interior of the place that made us decide to try out this restaurant. The interior had this “high class” vibe that focused on minimalist design. Instead of a regular table, they used a grill- type of table and used a wooden type of flat surface. Instead of using regular lights, they decided to go with the hanging light bulbs.

Dad and I had the same order – the Porterhouse Aussie Meat but Dad added an appetizer which is The Clamchowder. Mom, on the other hand, only ordered a Southern Chicken Salad with Mango Vinaigrette. If I were to rate the restaurant’s food, I will give it a 3.5/5. The steak was just alright. It became flavorful when I placed A1 sauce. It could have been better if they could put more flavor on the steak so that I won’t need to put any steak sauce. My mom found their salad to be alright as well.

If you are looking for a restaurant that is Instagram-worthy, Jamie’s Steak Room is a good option. If I were to crave for steak, I won’t go back to this restaurant not unless there are no good options left to eat at.

A New Cafe in Quezon City: Coffee Project

June 6, 2016

People who are close to me knows that I love coffee. It is a MUST to have coffee at least once a day to pump up my energy. Luckily, one of my best friends discovered this new garden cafe through Booky. It is known as Coffee Project.

Coffee Project is a garden inspired theme for a cafe. It is located at the Wil Tower Mall, in front of the ABS-CBN building. As we entered the cafe, we fell in love with the place! The interiors of the place suited how a cafe should look like with an added twist. There were a lot of interiors that were instagrammable. We can’t seem to stop taking pictures for the sake of Instagram!

I ordered their Cafe Sua Da – bestseller for their iced coffee and pasta. The Sua Da was strong but the sweet milk complimented the strong taste of the coffee. That was why I was able to drink it properly. I guess if the milk wasn’t that sweet, I wouldn’t be able to finish the coffee since I am not really fond of strong coffee. Their pasta, on the other hand, was just alright. It satisfied my hunger but I believe they can make their cooking better.

Coffee Project is one of a kind – their interiors with different designs and it seems to be a garden on our heads. The place is perfect for coffee dates, catching up with the best friends, and brunch meals. I may not have enjoyed their pasta but for sure, I am going back for their coffee.
